Cardigan castle stands on the northern bank of the River Teifi.
It was built in several stages, starting with an earth and timber fortress founded by the Norman invader Gilbert de Clare in 1110 AD. Cardigan was captured in 1171 by the Welsh prince of South West Wales, Rhys ap Tewdwr (The Lord Rhys), and the castle was rebuilt in stone. The first National Eisteddfod was held here in 1176.
Today, the castle is a heritage attraction, restaurant, accommodation and events venue, following a £12m restoration project.
